Five Benefits of Sleeping With Your Pet

Updated: Jun 9, 2022

We’ve recently been warned not to share our bed with our pets over health fears. But there’s plenty of research to suggest sleeping with our furry friends is good for us.

Here bed specialist MattressNextDay shares some health benefits of letting your pet sleep in your bed...

  • They reduce stress. Stress is one of the most disruptive factors when it comes to sleep. Cuddling your pet helps reduce stress levels and also elevates your mood, making it easier for you to fall asleep at night.

  • Deeper sleep. Studies have shown that sleeping with your dog helps you to relax and increases your flow of “love drug” oxytocin. This can have a profound impact on how deeply you sleep.

  • It stops night terrors. Dogs create a more positive sleeping environment as they reduce anxiety, which is often associated with nightmares. This means you're less likely to suffer with night terrors if you let your pooch share your bed with you.

  • You'll feel safer. Our dogs' instinct is to protect us and they will let us know if they sense something is off, so having them in bed with us when we're sleeping alone makes us feel more secure.

  • It can prevent allergies. Although sleeping in bed with your furry friend can cause reactions if you're allergic to pets, one study actually found that children who sleep with their dogs are less likely to have allergies later in life.

For me, there's nothing like settling down at bedtime, with a pooch curled up at my feet. They're the perfect bed buddy, keeping me warm and making me feel protected. I wouldn't have it any other way .
